The General Overseer of the one of the most populous Christian denomination in the Nigeria, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) yesterday visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye was in the Villa to discuss with the president on some issues that are yet to be revealed. Details of the meeting or purpose of the visit has yet to be made known by either the visitor, Pastor Adeboye, or the host, President Muhammadu Buhari.
However, Nigerians will remember that there is a burning issue in the country that affects churches most especially the big churches including the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
The federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari has introduced another law to the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA). Parts of the new laws give the federal government some power to appoint administrators for the big churches and for non-governmental organisations or civil societies under some specific conditions.
The CAMA has generated lots of reactions mostly from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). Apart from that two prominet pastors appear more agitated than others. Pastor David Oyedepo of the Winners Chapel and Apostle Johnson Suleiman are the front in the condemnation of the law.
However, while other pastors including Oyedepo and Suleiman have been complaining, and condemning the federal government for introducing the new laws, the RCCG general overseer has remained quiet and more mature in his reactions to the issue.
With the visit to the Presidential Villa, Pastor Adeboye has taught Nigerians that it is always better to resolve issues one-on-one with the federal government rather than expressing the grievances on the pages of newspapers, on the social media and on the radio and television.
Pastor Adeboye has portrayed himself as an individual who is mature to approach the government on any matter affecting the church or Nigerians. The RCCG General Overseer doesn’t join others to make a noise on about the issue. He understands the fact that the federal government will definitely listen if he talks to them. Hence, he made some bold steps to confront the government one-on-one.
