Governor of Anambra State Willie Obiano has commended the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubarka Adamu for commissioning Zone 13 Police Command at Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government of Anambra State.
The governor, who was represented by his special assistant on security matters, Chief Chikodi Anara said that with the establishment of the zonal command, the people of the state would no longer be burdened with traveling to Zone 9 Police Command at Umuahia, which had covered Anambra State but believed that the presence will add to the improved security situation in Anambra State.
In his remarks, the Inspector General of Police who was represented by the Deputy Inspector General of Police [DIG], Mr. Celestine C. Okoye who is in charge of south-east geo-political zone, and had paid a courtesy call to the traditional ruler of Ukpo, Dr. R.C Eze, commended Chief Arthur Eze, [Eze N’Ukpo] for his efforts in attracting the zonal command, describing him as “a pride of Igbo people”.
The DIG who gave hint of the diligence that went into selecting an Assistant Inspector General of Police [AIG] to pioneer the zonal command described the AIG, Mr. Dan-Mallam Mohammed as the “best” among his colleagues.
Okoye, who hails from Awka, Anambra State, further commended President Muhammadu Buhari for granting the passionate appeal of Nsugbe community to transfer the Mobil Police Command in the area to the community.
In his remarks, the AIG, Mr. Dan-Malam Mohammed promised that with the commissioning of the Zone 13 in Anambra State, the security situation in the state will receive greater boost. “We are here to serve the people, based on the democratic principles of human rights. We have brought policing to the grassroots to the good people of southeast of Nigeria.
“We are saying no to illegal arrests and detention, we are to serve them and maintain law and order. No more exra-judicial killing; and under my leadership, I will make sure I will operate under the principles of justice and equality, and I will make sure that the right of citizens is being protected. And all these will be anchored under the concept of community policing as instructed by the IGP. We will ensure that the peace being enjoyed by the people is protected.
In his contribution, Prince Arthur Eze thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for the gesture.
“I wish to thank the president for his numerous landmark projects in Southeast Geopolitical Zone, including the Enugu-Onitsha, Enugu-Port Harcourt Express Ways, second Niger bridge amongst others. The president listened to my appeal for the siting of the Zonal Police Command in Anambra State. He stated.
The highlight of the epochal event was the commissioning of the office facilities in the temporary zonal command along the Onitsha-Enugu Express Way,opposite the headquarters of Dunukofia Local Government Council by the IGP and inspection of facilities that will enable the smooth take-off of the zonal police command pending the completion of the permanent site at Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area.
Prominent personalities that graced the occasion include the traditional ruler of Ukpo, Dr. RC Eze, along with a cross section of traditional rulers in Anambra State. Other dignitaries include clergies, members of Anambra State House of Assembly, former and present members of the National Assembly.
Also in attendance were the governors of Enugu and Ebonyi States represented by their respective Secretaries to The State Government, Ebonyi and Enugu State Commissioners of Police.
